I never really used virtual desktops until I spent some time using Kubuntu; from then on I have found them to be an indispensable part of my workspace. When I switched back to Windows XP I found myself really missing the multiple desktops. I did some searching and tried out a few free options that are not really even worth mentioning until I came across DeskSpace from Otaku Software. It is unobtrusive, attractive and just works.

It supports a load of configuration options that should satisfy the tweaker in you, while coming ready-to-go right from install. The interface is intuitive, allowing you to drag windows from one desktop (side of the cube) to another. The current version (1.5.2) has added two desktops so that the entire cube is usable.

I have been using DeskSpace for a few months now and have loved it. It’s seamless integration into my workspace has filled the virtual desktop need on Windows. It is not free, but inexpensive and a deal at just under $20 with upgrades included until the next major version (2.0). My hope is that when 2.0 comes out they will offer an upgrade license fee rather than making you purchase a new full price license, but still it’s not too bad.
